Using One-Dimensional Compaction for Smaller Graph Drawings

چکیده
We use the technique of one-dimensional compaction as part of two new methods tackling problems in the context of automatic diagram layout: First, a post-processing of the layer-based layout algorithm, also known as Sugiyama layout, and second a placement algorithm for connected components with external extensions. We apply our methods to dataflow diagrams from practical applications and find that the first method significantly reduces the width of left-toright drawn diagrams. The second method allows to properly arrange disconnected graphs that have hierarchy-crossing edges.

Optimal Compaction of Orthogonal Grid Drawings
We consider the two{dimensional compaction problem for orthogonal grid drawings in which the task is to alter the coordinates of the vertices and edge segments while preserving the shape of the drawing so that the total edge length is minimized. The problem is closely related to two{dimensional compaction in vlsi{design and is conjectured to be NP{hard. We characterize the set of feasible solut...
متن کاملCombining Graph Labeling and Compaction
Combinations of graph drawing and map labeling problems yield challenging mathematical problems and have direct applications, e.g., in automation engineering. We call graph drawing problems in which subsets of vertices and edges need to be labeled graph labeling problems. Unlike in map labeling where the position of the objects is specified in the input, the coordinates of vertices and edges in...
متن کاملInapproximability of Orthogonal Compaction
We show that several problems of compacting orthogonal graph drawings to use the minimum number of rows, area, length of longest edge or total edge length cannot be approximated better than within a polynomial factor of optimal in polynomial time unless P = NP. We also provide a fixed-parameter-tractable algorithm for testing whether a drawing can be compacted to a small number of rows. Submitt...
متن کاملA Fast Multi-Dimensional Algorithm for Drawing Large Graphs
We present a novel hierarchical force-directed method for drawing large graphs. The algorithm produces a graph embedding in an Euclidean space E of any dimension. A two or three dimensional drawing of the graph is then obtained by projecting a higher-dimensional embedding into a two or three dimensional subspace of E. Projecting high-dimensional drawings onto two or three dimensions often resul...
متن کاملTwo Algorithms for Three Dimensional Orthogonal Graph Drawing
We use basic results from graph theory to design two algorithms for constructing 3-dimensional, intersection-free orthogonal grid drawings of n vertex graphs of maximum degree 6. Our first algorithm gives drawings bounded by an O(x/~ ) • O(x/~ • O(v~ ) box; each edge route contains at most 7 bends. The best previous result generated edge routes containing up to 16 bends per route. Our second al...
